Blackout Curtains: A Complete Buying Guide
What "blackout" actually means
Blackout curtains use a densely woven fabric or a dedicated opaque lining designed to block essentially all external light, rather than just dimming it the way a heavier standard curtain might. That distinction — full block versus partial dim — is worth confirming when comparing fabrics, since "heavy" and "blackout" aren't the same thing.
The lining does most of the work
Because the lining is what blocks the light, the decorative fabric on the outside can be almost any colour or pattern — you're not limited to dark shades just because the curtain is blackout-rated. Lighter outer colours also reflect more heat than dark ones, which is worth factoring in for a west- or south-facing room.
Where blackout earns its keep
Bedrooms are the obvious use case, especially given how early and intensely the sun comes up in Dubai through summer, but media rooms, nurseries and any room with shift-work sleep patterns benefit just as much. The same dense construction that blocks light also cuts a meaningful amount of heat gain and dampens some outside noise, even though it isn't purpose-built for either.
Fit and installation
Blackout fabric with its lining is heavier than an unlined curtain of the same size, so the track or rod needs to be rated for that added weight, particularly on a wide window or sliding door. This is one of the things we check during a free home consultation and measurement, alongside fabric and colour selection, with installation typically completed within 24–48 hours.
