Reupholstering vs Buying New: When Does Sofa Reupholstery Make Sense?
The frame is the real deciding factor
The single biggest question in a reupholster-or-replace decision is the condition of the frame underneath the fabric. A solid hardwood frame in good structural condition — no cracks, no sagging, joints still tight — is worth keeping and re-covering even if the fabric looks tired. A frame made from lower-grade material, or one that's already sagging, creaking or loose at the joints, usually isn't worth the cost of reupholstery, because you'd be putting new fabric over a problem that will resurface.
When reupholstery is usually the right call
- A well-made sofa with a good frame but dated, damaged or faded fabric.
- A piece with sentimental or design value — an inherited item, or a shape/size that's hard to find new.
- Foam and cushioning that's still supportive, or only needs replacing alongside the fabric (often bundled into a reupholstery job anyway).
- A sofa that fits its space exactly, where buying new risks an awkward size mismatch.
When buying new usually makes more sense
- A frame with structural damage — reupholstery won't fix an underlying frame problem.
- A low-cost sofa where the reupholstery cost approaches or exceeds a comparable new piece.
- A style or proportion that no longer suits the space — reupholstery changes the fabric, not the shape or size.
What actually happens during reupholstery
A proper reupholstery job strips the old fabric back to the frame, checks and repairs the frame and webbing, replaces or refreshes the foam and cushioning as needed, then re-covers with the new fabric of your choice — which also means you're not limited to whatever fabric the original manufacturer used. It's a genuine opportunity to change the whole look of a piece, not just patch it.
A quick gut check
If you like the shape and size of your current sofa and the frame feels solid when you sit and shift your weight (no creaking, no give at the joints), reupholstery is usually worth getting a quote on before assuming a new sofa is the cheaper or better option. A short in-home assessment is normally enough to tell whether the frame justifies the investment.
