Caring for and Cleaning Curtains in Dubai's Climate

Why curtains age faster in this climate

Three things work against curtains in the UAE specifically: sustained direct UV exposure (which fades and weakens fabric fibres faster than in cooler, less sunny climates), fine airborne dust that settles into the weave, and near-constant air conditioning, which keeps rooms dry and can make some fabrics brittle over time near vents.

A realistic cleaning schedule

  • Weekly: a quick vacuum with the upholstery attachment, or a shake-out if the curtain is easy to remove, to stop dust building up in the weave.
  • Every 3–4 months: a more thorough clean — machine wash on a gentle cycle if the fabric allows it, or professional dry cleaning for silks, velvets and anything with a structured lining.
  • Annually: check the track, gliders and heading tape for wear, especially on frequently opened curtains or wide sliding-door tracks that carry more fabric weight.

Sun-facing curtains need extra attention

Curtains on west- or south-facing windows take the most UV exposure and will show fading first, usually starting at the leading edge where the fabric folds when open. Rotating heavier curtains occasionally (swapping which panel gets the most direct sun, where the track design allows it) can even out wear. For rooms with harsh, consistent sun, a lighter-coloured or UV-resistant fabric will visibly outlast a dark, untreated one.

Don't ignore the lining

Thermal and blackout linings do a lot of the heat-blocking work, but they also take the brunt of UV damage, protecting the decorative fabric in front of them. If a lining starts to look worn, cracked, or discoloured well before the outer fabric does, that's normal — it's doing its job. Relining a curtain is usually cheaper than replacing the whole thing and can meaningfully extend its life.

Quick fixes before a full replacement

A curtain that looks "tired" doesn't always need replacing. Steaming (rather than ironing) often restores drape and removes minor creasing without stressing the fabric. A professional clean can lift years of dust that a home wash won't fully remove. Track and glider maintenance — cleaning old dust out of the channel — often fixes a curtain that's started sticking or hanging unevenly, which is sometimes mistaken for a fabric problem.
